which Inspector Jules Maigret operates at his surliest He realizes that the perpetrator is sowing red herrings to disguise the real purpose of the crime spree And that the finest citizens of Concarneau have the most to hide For those looking for a mystery story with some French flair and an off beat plot, look no farther than The Yellow Dog There s a reason this one is considered a classic Maigret The early books in this series have been a little bit hit and miss in terms of real quality vs Simenon s famed speedy production but The Yellow Dog was reissued as part of the Penguin called in to solve the seemingly random shooting of a drunken major from a letterbox of a locked up abandoned building There s a multitude of suspects and suspicions amongst the locals and many red herrings planted in his path but naturally Maigret has everything under control.Simenon puts together a fine mystery with a high quality of human observation and a way of setting scene that is second to none The way he evokes the cold and fog of small town life leaves you thinking you can smell the damp in the air, even when you re on an air conditioned train in Perth, and the games he plays with your sympathies for each character makes for a fun ride.People have criticised the passivity of Maigret in this story and others from the near hundred in the collection but personally I enjoy them knowing your hero is playing games with everyone from the beginning to establish proof of guilt brings a different level of pleasure from your mystery reading Well that was fun, and the ending completely unexpected as I keep saying,on this book shortly. Very enjoyable, I am loving these books so far I think this one is my second favourite of the ones I have read up to now. ship, smuggling and a link to America are revealed with revenge the motive but that is not the reason or rather a contribution Great atmospheric writing although the revenge motive a bit far fetched The fifth book in the new Penguin Maigret series Georges Simenon s gripping tale of small town suspicion and revenge , in Linda Asher s timeless translationThere was an exaggerated humility about her Her cowed eyes, her way of gliding noiselessly about without bumping into things, of quivering nervously at the slight est word, were the very image of a scullery maid accustomed to hardship And yet he sensed, beneath that image, glints of pride held firmly in check She was anaemic Her flat chest was not formed to rouse desire Nevertheless, she was strangely appealing, perhaps because she seemed troubled, despondent, sicklyIn the windswept seaside town of Concarneau, a local wine merchant is shot In fact, someone is out to kill all the influential men and the entire town is soon sent into a state of panic For Maigret, the answers lie with the pale, downtrodden waitress Emma, and a strange yellow dog lurking in the shadows SoI wrote this whole review in French and was very happy because enti re une second fois, donc, voici la derni re phrase que j ai crit auparavant laquelle, au fond, dit la partie la plus importante de ma revue Bref, je peux recommander ce livre car il est int ressant, et si on veux lire quelque chose rapidement, on peut lire cela vite et se divertir Mais je ne pense pas qu il soit une histoire de myst re exemplaire Pour les erreurs dans ce que j ai critpardonnez moi, c est l essaie qui compte, n est ce pas Oh, je dois ajouter Tout seul dans la voiture, Maigret haussa au moins trois fois les paules, comme un homme qui a une rude envie de se moquer de lui Ce ne serait pas un livre fran ais sans la haussement d paules, pas un, pas deux, mais TROIS fois Not my favorite of the Maigret books I have read to date Maigret does seem removed and totally unconcerned as a town becomes hysterical with fear as to who will be the next victim as newspapermen churn articles about the poisoning attempts, shootings and the giant roaming the streets are amusing and the characters are dramatically composed, but there were references to the young woman and her circumstances that would not fly in today s publishing houses but this did come out in 1931 It is a quick read
